Inspiring Author of the Week: Ilona Andrews

The secare specialize in killing, to the point where other Kinsmen are wary of them. Fated Blades begins as Ramona Adler and Matias Baena make a temporary alliance, despite their enmity, in a race to secure their stolen technology, catch the betrayers; thus saving their families.

I’ve read little in the last few months. I’ve been watching more foreign films and television series. But when Ilona Andrews came out with a new novella in their Kinsmen universe, I knew it would be a story to bring me back to reading. Fated Blades is the third book in the Kinsmen series, the last book published about a decade ago.

The Kinsmen Universe takes place in the distant future where “genetically and technologically advanced families-control cast financial empires. They are their own country, their own rulers, and their only limits are other Kinsmen.” – Ilona Andrews Each book is a standalone space opera romance, making them fast, fun reads.

Each book takes an unlikely couple on a unique planet and pits them against incredible odds. The planet Rada is no expectation. Where Matias and Ramona face continuous attacks from all fronts and are shocked to find they can rely on each other.

Ramona is a strong, witty, empathetic heroine, all characteristics I love in a female lead. She is independent and does standalone looking after the family and the family business. But she would love to have someone she could count on, someone who wouldn’t betray her.

Matias is a controlling workaholic. Focused on the family business, he sacrifices everything else without hesitation. It is what made their alliance believable to me. They both are so focused on their families, they make a temporary alliance, risking each other’s betrayal, to save their families from ruin.

Both Ramona and Matias are heads of their secare, Kinsmen, families. When there is a betrayal to the family, it is up to them to fix it. What is worse is that it was their spouses who carried out the betrayal.

This was the perfect story to bring me back to reading. It was fast, witty, energetic, with the tension of forbidden love. As it was a novella, there is just enough setup to bring the Kinsmen universe to life, without sharing too much of the history of the Kinsmen to slow the story down. It made me realize I should read more novellas.

Below is a little spoiler, but it is chapter 1, so it sets up the story with sharp, visceral pain. Like ripping off a bandaid.

“your wife is having an affair with my husband,” Ramona said.

For a moment they shared a silence as he came to grips with Cassinda licking the inside of Gabriel Adler’s mouth.

Ramona spoke first. “That brings me to my second question. Have you experienced any security or data breaches in the last few weeks? Go ahead. Check. I will wait.”

Fated Blades – Ilona Andrews

Ilona Andrews are powerful writers in the Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and in-between genres. I can always count on their books for action, wit, and romance. You do not need to read the other Kinsmen books first but can jump right into Fated Blades. But I urge you to read the others. They are fantastic. Enemies turn into frienemies as the pair, and other kinsmen, learn of the peril to New Delphi, their home.

Overall, the characters were strong from the beginning and their generation tension engaging. I liked both of the leads and the consistency of their characters throughout the novella. There is internal conflict, but externally, they both stick to their goal and their word. The world Andrews built well enough for my imagination to fill in the rest, and I would not mind checking out the cafe on the side of the cliff. It sounds amazing. A fast, fun read when it’s snowing outside or if you just need to escape from reality for a little while.

The Kinsmen Universe continued to impress me as I find most Sci-fi and fantasy I read are novels, yet these novellas continue to create an immersive universe while moving the story along with action and wit. I will now go back and reread the other books in this universe. I suggest you do the same. Happy Reading!

Inspiring Author of the Week: Ilona Andrews

Yes, you who have been with me for a while are correct, I already shared Ilona Andrews as an Inspiring Author. Why have I brought the duo back so soon? Women’s Independence Day! I love the Innkeeper Chronicles and the independent females who take on what scares them most to reach their ultimate goals, find and create a family.

They use Earth as the crossroads of the Galaxy. As the crossroads between wormholes and dimensional gateways, Earth has a lot of unique visitors and needed a place for them to stay during their travels. Enter the Innkeepers. The Inn and the Innkeeper have the extraordinary power to cater to all of their guests’ needs, be it a Vampire castle or a specialized chicken coop, while maintaining their secrets from humanity.

Dina Demille grew up in an Inn and became an Innkeeper herself. As she focuses on bringing the long-abandoned Inn back to life, Dina is desperate for magical guests. Although she had a long-term tenant, who incidentally has a bounty on her head, Dina must keep her tenant safe while dealing with space vampires, werewolf soldiers, and bounty hunters.

Dina spent the last few years searching the Galaxy for her parents and their missing inn. At last, she realized another way she might find them was through the guests at her own inn, Gertrude Hall. Something unworldly is attacking the dogs in her neighbourhood and Dina gets involved.

This was a territorial kill, left for everyone to find — look how bad and clever I am.

Ilona Andrews, Clean Sweep

I am a huge fan of both sci-fi and fantasy stories. Books that can include the best elements of both are my favourite. The new and enticing use of magic in my world, the visitation of aliens, even if they are space vampires. They see Earth as not a particularly interesting place, except for its location. I think Clean Sweep and the rest of the Innkeeper Chronicles fit my criteria well. Dina is a magic-filled human. She has the same challenges as many new business owners; she needs to find her clientele to maintain her business. Who can’t relate to that? The quirky fun is that her inn, Gertrude Hall, is somewhat sentient, and her guests are unique and more violent. She is also a good neighbour and doesn’t like that some alien entity with claws is killing the neighbourhood dogs. I wouldn’t either.

International Women’s Day

is a great day for me to celebrate examples of independent female characters in fiction. Why does it make me think of Dina? She is young, alone, and made hard choices in her life. At first, she thought she wanted to be an average human to fit in. Then, when she lost her parents and no one could explain how or why, Dina and her brother searched the Galaxy for answers. When she still did not find them, she focused on an Inn to draw the answers to her instead of searching for them. Not once did she give up. She focused completely on her desire to find her parents and made her choices independently.

No matter if there was a sexy vampire or a stubborn werewolf interested in her, she moved forward with what she knew was best for her and meeting her goals. She also learned her own blind spots through the series and learned to compromise where it made sense and to hold to her standards the rest of the time.

Maud, her sister and the protagonist in the second trilogy of the Innkeeper Series, is no slouch either. A skilled warrior, poet, and survivor of the most savage vampire-held planet, she trusts no one outside of her family. After she, and her daughter, are rescued by her sister, she learns there are others she can trust, if she can open her heart.

Vampire worldview, condensed into three sentences: If it’s not food or a pet, kill it, it might be poisonous.

Ilona Andrews, Sweep of the Blade

I love both sisters and their survival instincts. I cannot wait for the next book in Maud’s journey. If you are interested in learning more about the Demille sisters, you can find their information here.

Happy Reading!

Emerald Blaze: A Hidden Legacy Novel is the latest novel in the Hidden Legacy series. As with the rest of the series, it made me want to visit their world of magic, if only I could visit as a Prime magic user. A group of families with the power and wealth to change the world.

The first trilogy began with the oldest Baylor daughter, Nevada. The series followed her swift move into the world of Prime magic users while finding love along the way, no matter how obstinate that love was. I loved the series. The world building, the wit, and the action were all I could ask for from the couple who writes as Ilona Andrews. More than anything, the books made me fall in love with the Baylor family. Who, no matter how bad the odds, were always there for each other.

Emerald Blaze is the latest instalment in the second series, focusing on Catalina, the second in line to run the Baylor House. I loved Nevada’s work ethic and never ending love for her family. But Catalina’s journey is more difficult as we follow her drive to protect the Baylor House, while working as a Deputy to the warden of Texas. The difficulties, including the love and sacrifice that comes with the status change, hound Catalina. The balancing act of her many roles has Catalina on the edge of a blade, and adding in her unpredictable love interest, Alessandro, who had already crushed her heart.

I loved this book. In fact, I loved Emerald Blaze so much I read it over a morning while I was supposed to be exploring Jasper, Alberta, while on my holiday. It was worth it. The sweltering magically-changed Houston came to life through their words. The Pit, a piece of the city previously visited in Nevada’s trilogy, became the centrepiece of Catalina’s latest story. Alessandro, who previously crushed her heart, pivotal to keeping her alive and she investigates a murder that could be the end of everything.

If you enjoy magic, grit, wit, and romance, I strongly urge you to pick up this series. Make sure you don’t have other priorities, they will be missed. Do you have any fantasy or paranormal romance series that take you right into their magical world? If so, please share! I am always looking for more series to disappear into.
